Madroña Chorus

Through the Elementary School Chorus Program, the Arts Council of the Conejo Valley strives in helping students find their inner voice of music. The Arts Council feels that making music involves complex, higher order neural processes that integrate aural, spatial, logical, linguistic, kinesthetic, and emotional connection. We hope that the Elementary School Chorus program will be a pathway for each student to discover an appreciation for music.

Students will perform throughout the year and a special performance at the Thousand Oaks Civic Arts Plaza. Your child will learn voice production, harmony, diction, listening and blending skills and have fun preparing for our show. There will be an evening performance and a school assembly.

Madroña Music in the Classroom

Sponsored by the Madroña PTA.

Our Music in the Classroom is an amazing experience for all grades. We have two terrific instructors and we are so pleased to have the opportunity to provide this program for our students.

Kindergarten

Our instructor brings a guitar to kindergarten every week and has such a great time singing with the kids. The children learn songs, some simple music concepts and the opportunity to integrate lots of visuals aids. In such a fun environment, there is no shortage of little helpers on board. Everyone loves Music in the Classroom. This month they are learning to clap rhythms of quarter and eighth notes.

First and Second Grade

1st and second grade music students learn to sing songs as a group; they learn about various musical concepts including rhythm and pitch. They learn to enjoy music by listening to many different kinds of music. There is a great deal of movement with music in the primary grades.

Third Grade

3rd grade music students are prepared for a visit by the New West Symphony Music Van. They learn about all of the instruments of symphony orchestra, the instrument families, how sound is produced in each instrument and much more. After the music van visit, where they are able to hold and try out all the instruments, the focus of classroom music changes to singing, movement and learning about musical theory.

Fourth Grade

It's amazing to watch the kids play simple melodies on their recorders. They learn so quickly and making musical is a wonderful experience. Half of the time is devoted to recorders, the rest of the time we sing to a keyboard and guitar. We also have days where we do music games to learn notes and basic rhythms. In the spring we will have the "fourth grade concert series" were the students are given a chance to sign up to perform in the classroom on any instrument that they may be learning.

Fifth Grade

5th grade music students learn songs, with an early focus on patriotic songs. They also learn about music associated with the U.S. Armed Forces. Rhythm concept and musical notation are some of the subjects we talk about in 5th grade music.

Currently, her youngest is in fifth grade. Marie has been teaching at the school for the past eleven years. She loves to sing and it's been her goal to involve everyone.

Gail Matulaitis has been a music specialist in both the Conejo Valley and Simi Valley School Districts for many years, and is in her 6th year at Madroña. Mrs. Matulaitis is a cellist and works with middle school students in Simi Valley to prepare them for festivals. She can also be found in pit orchestras and playing chamber music in the local area.
